so I was wondering if 3.4 oz of perfume is big or small..

Wikipedia claims anyone with some expertise using GC/MS can get the general formulas for any perfume. I was wondering if they are able to produce commercially viable replicas. If so, what do they do. If not, why not?
I’m mostly looking for more detail available online. One of my friends was claiming that because of this, perfume makers can only protect/copyright the shape of the bottle and this is how they sell the perfume, whereas anyone can make and sell an identical formula via reverse engineering.
